Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital has accumulated extensive experiences and data in the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal cancers, such as stomach cancer and liver cancer, as well as other diseases related to the gastrointestinal system whose incidence rate is high in Korea. In particular, with respect to stomach cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, gallbladder cancer, colorectal cancer, and other gastrointestinal cancers, it is producing the best outcomes through customized care based on multi and interdisciplinary approach..

Also playing a leading role in endoscopic diagnosis and operations, the department operated an endoscopy room. In 1994, the endoscopy room was upgraded to an official organization. In addition to diagnostic endoscopy such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy, it is producing remarkable achievements in the field of therapeutic endoscopy.

The first-generation endoscopic ultrasound system introduced in 1996 made a considerable contribution to enhancing healthcare quality. It also achieved the feat of increasing the quality of colonoscopy between the 1990s and early 2000s. While developing therapeutic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography since the 2000s, it produced remarkable results by performing endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early-stage stomach cancer and gastric adenoma as the pre-stage of stomach cancer since 2005. ESD was performed over 1,000 times in 2012, with the data obtained from the procedures organized and published in a prestigious international medical journal in 2015. (Surg Endosc. 2015 Sep;29(9):2583-9.) Based on the results, ESD was also performed actively for early-stage colorectal cancer and large colorectal adenomas.

The endoscopy room was renovated in 2010, and a new endoscopic ultrasound system was introduced for fine needle biopsy and interventional procedures. In 2012, capsule endoscopy was introduced for use in the diagnosis and treatment of small bowel diseases.

The endoscopy room also maintains the world’s top-tier quality in terms of disinfection and management. In 2012, it was certified as an excellent endoscopy room by the Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.

The Department of Gastroenterology operates a number of other basic medical research rooms to develop studies in the fields of animal testing, cell testing, and organoid.

The medical staff of the Department of Gastroenterology consists of You Cheoul Kim, Chul Ju Han, Jin Kim, Su Cheol Park, Ki Young Yang, and Yeon Joo Kim. Based on its accomplishments over the last 60 years, the department is committed to achieving development to provide top-notch service by further enhancing its status in terms of healthcare, education, and research..
