National Radiation Emergency Medical Center

Welcome to Korea Institute Of Radiological & Medical Sciences.

Welcome to the
National Radiation Emergency Medical Center

Established in 2002, the National Radiation Emergency Medical Center (NREMC) is leading medical preparedness and response for radiation emergencies in Korea by developing national infrastructure and nurturing human resources.

Many improvements have been made since the establishment of NREMC. The network of medical preparedness and response for radiation emergencies began with 10 Radiological Emergency Medical Institutions, but now it has expanded to 31 Radiological Emergency Medical Institutions to cover the whole nation.

In addition, as the public concern for radiation has increased due to the 2011 Fukushima accident and 2018 radioactive mattress scandal, NREMC has conducted various activities to relieve anxiety and communicate with the public.

Moreover, NREMC has recently begun to engage with supporting pre-distribution of iodine thyroid blocking agent, and investigating effects of occupational exposure among radiation workers in Korea.

As the past 20 years of NREMC laid the foundation for the national system for medical preparedness and response, the next 20 years to come will be an opportunity for strengthening it further.

With the lessons learned from past challenges, NREMC will try its best to ensure the health and safety of citizens. Thank you.
