National Radiation Emergency Medical Center

Welcome to Korea Institute Of Radiological & Medical Sciences.

Study on developing techniques for precise diagnosis of radiation-exposed patients and providing personalized medicine

Exposure assessment of hign dose radiation

  • Objective
    • Enable quick triage of radiation-exposed patients in case of mass casualty event and provide detailed dose assessment
  • Activities
    • Establish physical exposure assessment system
    • Develop rapid diagnosis kit based on gene analysis

Regenerative technologies for radiation injuries

  • Objective
    • Develop cell therapies to fully treat the underlying radiation exposure
  • Activities
    • Develop organ-targeting stem cell therapy techniques
    • Develop advanced regenerative therapy techniques

New therapeutics for radiation syndrome

  • Objective
    • Develop new drug with high level of efficiency and safety
  • Activities
    • Develop candidate substance for targeted therapy based on genome analysis
    • Pre-clinical/clinical research based on drug repurposing
  • In vitro rapid screening system

  • In vivo efficiency evaluation system

  • Large animal model system

Korean Radiation Workers Study (KRWS)

  • Construct a cohort of Korean radiation workers for long-term follow-up
  • Investigate health risks of radiation workers exposed to protracted low doses

Cohort enrollment

  • Retrospective cohort study after reform of the Nuclear Safety Act (June 2021~)
    • 190,000 including retired workers, newly hired workers (dynamic cohort)
